I've used a lot of filet knives over the years...especially cheapies purchased from sporting goods stores. Wanting a first class filet knife that could last for decades, hold an edge, feel good in the hand and even look great, I shopped all over. I found this Puma Steelhead Knife on Amazon.com. Until that point I was unaware that this great knife maker even made fillet knives...but they sure do! I LOVE IT! Great quality, sharp as a razor and durrable. This knife was everything I would expect from Puma Knives and more. It's a work of cutlery art. Made in Germany of high grade steel. The Germans know steel and engineering excellence. I was impressed with every aspect of this Puma knife. I liked it so much I purchased one for my father (an avid fisherman). He will receive it from me for Fathers Day. the plastic holster that it comes with is excellent. It is vented to allow water and "fish juice" :) to drain out of it rather than gum up, as happens with leather holsters. Leather holsters make no sense for a fillet knife. Exposure to salt water or even fresh water and the liquids associated with cleaning fish ruins leather. Puma knows this and designed a terrific hard plastic sheath which is vented to breath and drain. It attaches to the belt with a strong clip, which clips on over your belt, rather than having to fish your belt through the sheath. I like this. You don't have to take your belt off when you sit down to fish or sit in your boat, truck, etc. Puma thinks of it all!

I purchased this knife for my Father for Christmas - it arrived exactly as seen here on amazon - it is pricy, but the blade is very unique and the wood handle is very appealing. It would be nice if the knife were a assisted opening knife or auto-opening knife - I am not so certain how practical this knife would be for everyday use - this is more a show knife. The price is a little high, shop around as Amazon has severl variations of this knife.

when I purchased this knife I was unlucky enough to be sent a product with a defective part, however PriceTwin was prompt in their response to my request to return the item and dealing with their customer service has been a pleasure. They almost always respond to any question within 24 hours. I would definitely buy from them again and just hope to be less unlucky next time.

If you are looking for a well made fixed blade hunting knife, this knife is a classic style that is as well made as you will find. The rivets are large and not fully recessed to give the handle more material under the rivets, so the handle will be alot less likely to crack. The blade is sharpe and beautiful with plenty of up-sweep to allow for an easy job when skinning. I love to show this knife to friends it is a piece of art as well as an extremely well made durable tool. The sheath is the best that I have seen. It is made of very thick rigid leather that will not flop over when on the belt. The snap closure holds the knife securly and when I am crawling through mountain laurel or working my way down a rock face, I feed the lanyard, that is attached to the top of the sheath, through the brass grommet in the handle. If you loose this knife out of your sheath it will be because of human error, not Puma error.

Back in the mid-70's I scraped together the $75 it took to buy a "German Steel" knife. Back then my main recreation was hunting so the knife saw a good bit of use, everything from rabbits and squirrels to deer to large wild pigs. The blade is thick enough to stand up well to cutting through the animal's brisket. The long sweep of the blade and the narrow point is just what's needed for skinning. But, what I really liked about the knife was its ability to stay sharp past the field dressing through the skinning and field quartering of the game. In fact many times I continued to use the knife when we were back at the house de-boning, processing and packaging the meat. I am finally retiring that knife and the reason I am submitting a review is I am about to pay the knife the highest compliment and buy another like it to use for the next 30 years.

The knife has good looks as far as styling but isn't very comfortable to grip because the rivets are not recessed. this is the only knife I have ever seen that is made like this. They actually bulge from the handle. They should have recessed the rivets. Also for a knive maker with a reputation for excellence the finish on the blade was rather crude with spots that can't be removed without abrasives which would ruin the looks. I am not happy with this knife.
