It is nice and seems sturdy but I have not used it for any heavy cutting yet but I think it will work good. Only complaint is it comes dull.

This is a really good blade for its price. Very sturdy and durable. They only bad thing is that the sharpness it comes in isn't too great, but sharpen that up and its an amazing product. If you're looking for a great knife that won't break the bank, I would highly reccomend this one.

the 12 in. blade machete from cold steel is a great buy,,has a cordura sheath to protect the blade, which is carbon steel,,not stainless steel,,,,,I thinned out the cutting edge and reprofiled the blade,,put a tungsten carbide sharpener to the edge, then to a steel to straighten the edge and a ceramic steel to finish,,,,this knife will slice a tomato thin enough to see thru,,has a comfortable soft type rubber handle that will not slip when wet,,if you like big blade knives you will like the price and the looks of this Cold Steel Machete with 12 in. blade....

This is a very decent blade, especially at this price point. The handle feels very solid in hand, is well textured and has the slightest rubberiness to it (not HARD plastic, but it's not at all "gummy bear" rubbery). I especially like the little flair at the end of the handle, which gives me confidence that the handle won't slip out of hand on a swing, even if my hands were cold. Balance is about an inch and a half to two inches into the blade from the handle-blade junction. The blade is solid. I was concerned about there being flex in it, at only 3mm thick, but it has little to no flex (flexing in hand). Nice baked on epoxy coating, good on the carbon steel. The blade is sharp out of box, but not ridiculously sharp. It sliced paper decently. Nice point on it. Not much to say, it is what it looks like. The sheath is decent at the price, no leather (good), nothing to hold water. Riveted and stitched, plastic guards towards knife-point, unremarkable belt loop, snapping crossover for handle. Overall, a really excellent large knife/machete crossover at a remarkable price. Everybody should have one.

Our Bowie Point Machete is quick, fast and lively in the hand, which makes it an outstanding slashing blade and admirable chopper. But its most winning attribute is its clipped point, which makes it an excellent piercing tool...

I have tried many different sharpeners. These are the best yet. Will last forever. Reasonably priced. The finer stone I use for my kitchen knives. the medium and course I use for my garden clippers and tools. From years of use, I can give these sharpeners a five star rating without qualification

I'd recommend these to anyone with varied sharpening needs. They are a little smaller than I expected, but they work fine. I know the older models came with a nice wood handle, but hey, it's 2008 and the set is under $20 for the three.

These are the easiest and fastest means of sharpenning knives, scissors and other tools that I have ever encountered -- innumerable uses around the house and shop. Small and light as they are, I take at least one of them with me whenever I travel as well. I highly recommend this product.

I really like this album but I was horrified to open it and discover that it's not a silver, factory-pressed CD but a CD-R! I can't rate it more than 1 star for such a dishonest ruse. Amazon and the aker should state right up front what this actually is. CD-Rs are more susceptible to heat and magnetism than CDs. They are not as stable nor do they have the same longevity. I felt quite cheated by this.

This is a rather large knife. Or is it a small machete? If one seeks the latter, it lacks the swingable heft of a proper machete. Get a Gerber. If the former, it's well made, great design, ergonomic, sharp, great feature set. Just.. big. Well worth the money, but check it out first if you can, in person, to see if it truly suits your needs.

Very high quality; well balanced handling; solid feel and construction; VERY, VERY sharp right out of the box. Sheath is tightly sewn and has an attached pouch that makes for a very good gun clip holder. Knife will not bust through the sheath. I haven't seen this knife for less than $75 in my local retail stores that sell SOG products. Great for adventure camping.

This knife has an outstanding feel in the hand. I brought it with me camping and it easily cut through small branches and greatly assisted me in gathering wood for a fire. The saw on the back of the knife came in quite handy for bigger limbs and as a bonus - it has a pouch on the front of the sheath for a smaller knife. Overall, this is a great product and very durable.

Like most things you can always spend more money, but you definitely get your money's worth with this knife. I bought it for camping, but have only used it a bit. Now that camping season is pretty much over I will use it for personal defense, if needed.

This knife could be a lot better, if the blade was a little thicker and the handle a little biger. Looks great, but it's a little lite. It would be worth a lot more if they would bulk it up. last drawback is MADE IN CHINA. All in all for the price it's OK. You get what you pay for.

Great knife. Perfect size for hiking or camping. Very well made. Best in its class for price.

Good knife comes sharp enough to shave with, haven't used it yet but feels pretty durable and comes with nice sheath.

This thing is amazing. The edge is super sharp. The weight is balanced and just feels like a solid piece of kit. The form factor is super sleek. The extra touches over the regular version are nice too. The coating on the blade is better, the width of the blade is wider, there's a ridged spine for better control and the grip on the handle is better. If you're getting a survival knife, why not go all out right? The kydex sheath is really nice and the cutout for quick slicing of rope is a convenient touch. I'll primarily be using the knife on a boat in a saltwater setting, so the rust-resistant properties and enhanced coating were of importance when deciding which knife to buy, as well as serated edge for quickly cutting tangled lines if need be. Overall very pleased with the quality of the knife. Time will tell how it endures the elements but first impression is that it will do fine.

This is my second Black Seal Pup Elite and both appear identicle however the steel from my first one was made in Japan and the second was made in taiwan. The blade is sharp and it might be just as well made but don't be surprised when you recieve your knife if it says taiwan on it.

This is the best survival knife I have ever had. Several years ago I was issued a SEAL Pup as a test article for SWCC boat teams (long since retired). The knife was an excellent survival knife and tested well. Ufortunately, it was subsequently stolen from me during a break-in and I have missed it ever since. I finally broke down and got a replacement and am thrilled with the features that have been added since my original. The kydex sheath is a must have over the nylon sheath. It holds the razor sharp blade well and I prefer kydex bcause it will not absorb water like the nylon. My original SEAL Pup had a kydex sheath but since then it has been redesigned with considerable upgrades to include the ability to mount it sideways and upside-down and a groove on the sheath so you can cut paracord without unsheathing the knife. The grip has a good feel, lends good balance to the knife, and has a hole for a lanyard. The grip is not too small like many knives on the market and is textured allowing a firm grip. The elite has a heavier blade and is worth the extra cost even though the original pup has an awesome blade. I prefer this size knife to the full size SOG SEAL knife when back packing or in the field as a survival blade but you wouldn't go wrong with either knife.

What happens when you design a really spectacular blade and then wrap a tragically bad handle to it? You end up with the SOG seal pup Elite. The blade on this knife is REALLY robust, robust being TWICE as thick as the blades of most other tactical knives. Its also notched on the top for grip and various survival related functions. (don't make me say woodworking) Now the fatal flaw. The handle. Its extremely small. If you have large hands, this thing feels like a steak knife at a cheap restaurant. The handle has no hand matching ergonomic shaping whatsoever, so if you have robot claws perhaps you might find this handle works with your servo activated pneumatic clobber hands. However my genetically average evolved human hands failed to find sufficient grip-li-fi-cation with this handle. Yes, "griplification" isn't a real word but George Bush would dig it. And where is the buttcap for smashing or piercing? Its like SOG fired the design team after the blade was done and asked the neighborhood kids to come in and finish the design. The sheath is workable, but I think you will really appreciate the Kydex sheath which is slightly more but definitely worth it.

Very good blade quality; however, the handle is a bit cheap (plastic) for the money.

I have the plain blade version with a nylon sheath instead of the kydex. My preferences for the plain blade and nylon sheath are based on the ease of resharpening the simpler profile and the extra pocket for a small sharpening stone and cigarette lighter found on the nylon sheath. Some people prefer the partially serreated for cutting cord and thick fabric. There is rasping on the back of the blade that could be used to notch small limbs for building a improvised shelter or something. I haven't found use for them yet, but I have had fun rasping notches into small branches. Maybe that would help when making a splint after you twist your ankle or whatever you might do. The knife is light, but not flimsy. I have found that this is a great size. A very small knife might be more packable and a big knife should handle bigger jobs. But with that being said, I have found this knife straps easily to my backpack shoulder strap's molle type webbing (another plus with the nylon sheath), out of the way but accessible, and I have never had a job this knife wouldn't do. I suppose that means SOG has found the perfect size to balance convenience and utility. The checkering on the grip gives excellent retention in hand and the handle profile has perfect ergonomics for my medium sized hands. Seriously, the finger grooves feel like the were designed for my hand. There is also a larnyard hole on the handle which is a feature I like. I'm not normally in a situation where dropping my knife would be a big problem, but it can happen and an extra foot or so of 550 para cord could always end up being usefull. I haven't abused this knife, so I can't talk about what it can survive. I really like it and intend to keep it as long as possible, so I handle it with the respect appropriate for something you value. It is very possible that it could handle abuse, I'm just saying I can't comment on that point. A testament to my level of satisfaction is the fact that I bought another one after I thought I lost the first. I later found the first and still don't regret buying a second one. Now I can keep one with my backpack, and one in my truck.

This is going to be one of my favorite knives. Not too big, not too small. Sharp and lightweight. I plan to take it hiking, where a lightweight fixed blade knife comes in handy. The sheath leaves a little to be desired but is serviceable. I may look into one of the aftermarket sheathes available. Overall a good knife for a good price.

What else can be said about this knife that has not been said? It's great. The elite's extra-features are amazing, and if you look around you'll see that this seller is under most non-elite SOG prices! Buy it, and you'll use it.

I was 10 years old in 1956 when I first saw the Jim Bowie series. I was amazed at how well I remembered especially the first couple of episodes. I enjoyed them then and I enjoyed them now except our TV picture back then was a little better than these recordings but they are acceptable. Unfortunately, most of the history of Jim Bowie has been undergoing revisions over the past few years, apparently beginning with the Flayderman publications. I have gone out of my way to see both sides of the revisionists/non-revisionists arguments and I have come to the conclusion that the old original stories (or myths, if you prefer) are probably more accurate than they are given credit for. Maybe someday, when we get to view that great video-archive-in-the-sky that God owns we will all be able to see the inalienable truth about this great hero of our frontier.

this dvd is not of the best quality.there is one episode where the soundtrack does not coincide with the picture.I do believe this is a result of the quality of the original as far as the picture. However, the soundtrack mishap should be correctible. The purchase of these old tv series is a roll of the dice.

This release of "The Adventures of Jim Bowie" from the Platinum Disc Corporation comes approximately five months after VCI Entertainment released their collection of Jim Bowie episodes in December of 2003. So what's the difference between the two collections? Almost no difference. Platinum has included the same 13 episodes on their 2-disc set that VCI Entertainment included on their set, which also contained two discs. So which set should you get? The VCI set costs a bit more than Platinum's set but one of the episodes on the Platinum set, "Jim Bowie Comes Home," has an audio track that is horribly out of synch rendering the episode unwatchable. So you're really getting 12 watchable episodes with Platinum's set. Also, Platinum's logo appears in the bottom right corner of the screen from time-to-time, though it's not too distracting. It's not much of a sweetner, but VCI includes a brief biography of Scott Forbes, the series' star on their set. My rating for the VCI set is ****; this Platinum set gets *** due to the episode with audio problems. If you've already purchased the VCI set, you can skip this one. If you are new to the Jim Bowie series or want to revisit it, this set is priced decently, just be aware of the audio problem on "Jim Bowie Comes Home."

Alpha Video checks in with four episodes of the classic TV Western "The Adventures of Jim Bowie" (1956-1958) that appeared on ABC and starred Scott Forbes in the title role. The episodes selected are all from the series' first season (1956-57). On the plus side, the episode selection is good and fans of the series will be very happy to know that the premiere episode, "The Birth of the Blade," is included on this collection . . . the only DVD to include this episode (circa Winter 2004). The audio/visual quality is generally good, certainly not the pristine prints of modern day "high definition" television shows, but is very watchable and is comparable to VCI Entertainment's 13-episode set that was released a few months after this one. On the down side, three of the four episodes on this collection also appear on VCI's set. Still, if you're looking to include the premiere episode in your collection, this DVD is the way to go.This DVD will appeal to fans of the show and TV Westerns, as well as to those interested in classic television from the 1950s. The episodes included are as follows:1. The Birth of the Blade (Episode #1)2. The Squatter (Episode #2; also appears on VCI's release)3. Trapline (Episode #5; also appears on VCI's release)4. The Land Jumpers (Episode #11; also appears on VCI's release)

It came in good shape and is very durable. I wish the sound effect was a little more modern but whatever. It plays the sound effect from the movie Psycho, the stabbing shower scene. They might play it in other scenes, it's just been a while since i've seen the movie.

The historical Bowie was not a single design, but was a series of knives improved several times by Jim Bowie over the years. The earliest such knife, made by Jesse Clifft at Rezin Bowie's request resembled the Spanish hunting knives of the time and differed little from a common butcher knife. The blade as later described by Rezin Bowie, was nine and one half inches long, one quarter inch thick and one and one half inches wide. It was straight-backed having no clip point nor any hand guard with simple riveted wood scale handle. Rezin presented the knife to his brother because of a recent violent encounter with one Norris Wright. This is the knife that became famous after the sandbar duel of 1827. Bowie and Wright were attendants on opposite sides of the duel. When the principals quit the field, a fight broke out among the attendees and Bowie, though seriously injured by a rifle shot, killed Wright and drove his companions from the sandbar. Bowie and his knife, described by witnesses as "a large butcher knife," quickly attained celebrity and the Bowie brothers received many requests for knives of the same design. They commissioned more ornate custom blades from various knife makers including Daniel Searles and John Constable.

The version most commonly known as the historical Bowie knife would usually have a blade of at least six inches (15cm) in length, some reaching 12 inches (30cm) or more, with a relatively broad blade that was an inch and a half to two inches wide (4 to 5 cm) and made of steel usually between 3/16" and 1/4" thick (from 4.8 to 6.4 millimeters). The back of the blade sometimes had a strip of soft metal (normally brass or copper) inlaid which some believe was intended to catch an opponent's blade while others hold it was intended to provide support and absorb shock to help prevent breaking of poor quality steel or poorly heat treated blades common on imported Bowie knives from England. Bowie knives also often had an upper guard that bent forward at an angle (S-guard) intended to catch an opponent's blade or provide protection to the owner's hand during parries and corps-a-corps. Some Bowie knives had a notch on the bottom of the blade near the hilt known as a "Spanish Notch." The Spanish Notch is often cited as a mechanism for catching an opponent's blade, however, some Bowie researchers hold that the Spanish Notch is ill suited to this function and frequently fails to achieve the desired results. These researchers, instead, hold that the Spanish Notch has the much more mundane function as a tool for stripping sinew and repairing rope and nets, as a guide to assist in sharpening the blade (assuring that the sharpening process starts at a specific point and not further up the edge), or as a point to relieve stress on the blade during use. The version attributed to blacksmith James Black had the back edge of the curved clip point, also called the "false edge," sharpened in order to allow someone trained in European techniques of saber fencing to execute the maneuver called the "back cut" or "back slash". A brass quillon was attached to protect the hand, usually cast in a mold.

The English Sheffield knife making region was quick to enter the market with "Bowie Knives" of a distinctive pattern that most modern users identify with the true form Bowie. The Sheffield pattern blade is thinner than the Black/Musso knives while the false edge is often longer with a less pronounced clip. The shape and style of blade was such that the Bowie knife could serve usefully as a camp and hunting tool as well as a weapon. Many knives and daggers existed that could serve well as weapons, and many knives existed that could serve well as tools for hunters and trappers, but the Bowie knife was designed to do both jobs well, and is still popular with hunters and sportsmen even in the present day.

The curved portion of the edge, toward the point, is for removing the skin from a carcass, and the straight portion of the edge, toward the guard, is for chores involving cutting slices, similar in concept to the traditional Finnish hunting knife, the "puukko" (though the typical early 19th-century Bowie knife was far larger and heavier than the typical puukko). Arkansas culturalist and researcher Russell T. Johnson describes the James Black knife in the following manner and at the same time captures the quintessence of the Bowie Knife: "It must be long enough to use as a sword, sharp enough to use as a razor, wide enough to use as a paddle, and heavy enough to use as a hatchet." Most such knives intended for hunting are only sharpened on one edge, to reduce the danger of cutting oneself while butchering and skinning the carcass.

Since the 1960s, Bowie knives with sawteeth machined into the back side of the blade appeared inspired by the Air Force survival knife NSN: 7340-00-098-4327. The sawteeth were intended to cut through the Plexiglas canopy of a downed aircraft. During the Vietnam war the US Army issued them to helicopter crews for the same purpose.
